Down Pillow

This is one of the two swans that float about the ponds at the local gardens. They nap like this, with their long beautiful head and neck resting gracefully across their back. Below the bank was a bit of litter that had drifted against the shoreline. On magnification, I realized it was the other swan asleep in the crevice . It seems it enjoys a water mattress.

I don't know this as a fact, but I'm told that swans will not tolerate other birds in their same lake. I've read that people who manage lakes (as in residential or office settings) will try luring swans to their lakes so that they will keep the geese away. Regardless, a pair of swans on a lake is a beautiful sight.

Your swan pictures are lovely and I love the title of your blog. Thank you for sharing.

Pablo - These seem to have made their peace with the Canada Geese that come and go on these ponds - often in large numbers. Maybe that's it - perhaps the swans just gave up.

dmmgmfm - Thank you - I think you're the first person to comment on the title. I wrote a poem called "Looking Up" after a long winter of mourning the deaths of our two dogs within a month of each other. The returning sun and the returning geese lifted my spirits after those dark months. Spring is always so healing.
