January Ice.

Fire and Ice - by Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

January Cat

4 degrees tonight.
I watched you cross the snow.

Wary.

I’ve purposely made you wary of me.
Killer of birds.

The birds I feed at well-stocked feeders.

Earlier this year, in the softer seasons,
your eyes followed me from the field, the driveway,
from beside the shrine to my dead aunt
at the edge of the woods.

Now my eyes follow you, belly-deep in snow.

I see your paw prints disappearing beneath the porch
where I imagine you spend these long winter nights
curled among last summer's leaves.

Please find the chicken pieces I dropped beneath the swing.
And dream a dream of birds
and a full-bellied spring.

Julie, That babe in your arms is so sweet! How kind of you to take the time to stop by. Yes. I love that sun/icicle shot.

Larry. Well it's just so kind of you to stop by and say so. Thank you. I reeeally need to get around to my old blogging friends.

Hey AC. Thank you so much. Would you like a feral cat? I might have a few to spare ;-D

You are such a sweetheart. I love your poems, Cathy. They warm my soul.

If my poor poem warms your heart,Laurie - than can you imagine how your steadfast kindness warms mine?

Thank you, my friend.

I must get out of this rut and visit my patient blogging buddies.
I'm afraid winter and age has me holed up in unfortunate ways.

Great!

Thanks, June.

I'm having such a struggle with feral cats.

There are two on my front porch feasting on chicken leftovers I placed there earlier.

They're small and it's going to be brutally cold in the next few days.

Dang.

And then comes spring and baby birds . . .

Dang.
